Research Portal

The Institute of Visual Communication (IVC) Research Hub on Media, Technology, and Cultural Transformation serves as a platform for interdisciplinary inquiry into the changing relationships between communication media, technological systems, and contemporary cultural life. The hub brings together researchers, artists, designers, and scholars to explore how emerging technologies reshape perception, knowledge production, social interaction, and creative practice.

The hub is grounded in the understanding that communication media are not only channels of information, but environments that structure experience, memory, and imagination. As digital infrastructures, artificial intelligence, and networked technologies continue to evolve, they introduce new forms of agency, authorship, and mediation that challenge established boundaries between human and nonhuman actors. Through research and artistic experimentation, the hub investigates how technological systems participate in shaping cultural narratives, social institutions, and everyday practices.

Research within the hub spans a wide range of themes related to media and technological transformation. These are "Portals" that include the study of posthumanism and the redefinition of human identity in relation to machines and hybrid forms of intelligence; the politics of archives and the role of media in preserving, constructing, and contesting collective memory; and the exploration of the psychic and cognitive dimensions of artificial intelligence, examining how algorithmic systems simulate perception, decision-making, and representation.

Some portals in the hub address the dynamics of information in contemporary societies, including the circulation, filtering, and governance of data across digital networks. Concepts such as information parasites, misinformation, algorithmic bias, and platform governance are examined as part of a broader investigation into how communication technologies shape public knowledge and social organization. These inquiries are complemented by research into media aesthetics, digital culture, visual communication, artificial creativity, augmented and virtual environments, and the ethical implications of emerging technologies.

In addition to theoretical research, the hub supports practice-based and experimental approaches that integrate artistic production, design research, and technological innovation. Projects may take the form of exhibitions, publications, workshops, collaborative laboratories, and community-based initiatives that engage with real-world technological and cultural challenges.

By maintaining an open and evolving research agenda, the IVC Research Hub seeks to foster dialogue across disciplines and to create a space where new ideas, methods, and forms of expression can emerge. The hub aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of how communication media and technological systems shape the cultural, political, and social landscapes of the present and the future.

Under the IVC research hub, we currently have the following portals open as research projects in conjunction with the Beirut International University research groups
